Johnny Appleseed was a real person.
His real name was John Chapman (not "Appleseed"!) He was well known for planting apple trees across much of Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois. His mythos depicts a man who spread apple seeds at random, but in reality he was known for planting tree nurseries, to which he would return in order to care for the young trees. (source)
